I first read CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM , by Bill Martin, Jr., in my UCLA Writing Extension class with instructor Terry Pierce. Then, I found a video online. The presentation wasn't any ordinary reading - this video version has a catchy song. I couldn't get that song out of my head. I kept repeating, "Chicka chicka boom boom" while chuckling to myself for 24 hours! Yikes! I realized then that, if cleverly constructed phrases could put my brain on automatic pilot, endlessly repeating nonsensical sing-songy refrains, then the book successfully made its impact. Simply put, CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM, an ABC concept book, hooked me on writing with rhythm and rhyme.
By the way, you surely will recognize Bill Martin Jr.'s other outstanding, memorable titles: BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE? PANDA BEAR, PANDA BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE? and more.
