TRUMPET SONG is a contemporary retelling of THE UGLY DUCKLING.
Why does THE UGLY DUCKLING resonate with me?
It's a story of overcoming bullying and finding one's own inner worth. As a child, I experienced bullying and felt rejected by my flock of peers. So, my first published picture book has a cast and theme similar to that found in THE UGLY DUCKLING. I wrote TRUMPET SONG with a flock of uppity ducklings and a boisterous cygnet (a baby swan). While TRUMPET SONG is a contemporary tale, it differs from THE UGLY DUCKLING with lyrical and rhyming language ... and the cygnet plays the trumpet (but surely you already guessed that :-).
The below UGLY DUCKLING was illustrated by Jerry Pinkney and received a Caldecott Honor.
